Gorilla Trekking is among the top tourist activities in Uganda. Many tourists visit Uganda purposely for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The two parks are situated in far south western Uganda and they are the most visited per year.
Bwindi impenetrable National Park offer over 19 habituated gorilla families found in four sectors namely Buhoma sector, Ruhija sector, Rushaga sector and Nkuringo sector. Bwindi impenetrable National Park is crucial for the survival of the mountain gorilla, with approximately 400 individuals residing within the park.
On the other hand, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park protects one habituated gorilla family called Nyakagezi. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is situated at the boarder of Uganda- Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The park also shares Virunga region with Virunga National Park in DRC and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
Gorilla Trekking on self- drive can be done by visitors from Entebbe Airport, Kampala city or any where in Uganda. In Rwanda, visitors can go gorilla trekking on self-drive from Kigali Airport, Kigali city or anywhere in Rwanda.

A self-drive Uganda gorilla trek provides independence for independent travellers to Uganda Gorilla parks (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park). Major steps include booking a 4×4 vehicle and Gorilla permit in advance, planning a route with stops, and booking accommodations near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
It’s important to spend the overnight near the park to be able to catch up with next day’s Gorilla trekking which starts at 8am. Remember that gorilla trekking requires moderate fitness and all permits must be obtained from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or an authorized travel agent well in advance.
